System requirements (to run cl33n)
To run cl33n, you need a Pentium 2 or better with 128MB or more of RAM (180MB recommended) and a CD drive. Almost any PC made since 2001 should be powerful enough to run cl33n.
The PC must be configured to boot from the CD drive before it tries to boot from the hard disk. Most PCs are configured this way by default. To change the boot order you need to look in the PC's CMOS settings- the menu that you get on most PCs by pressing DEL, F1, F2 or F10 at startup.
The PC must be connected to the internet via some kind of router that is configured to use DHCP. Most corporate and public access PCs are set up this way. It's also very popular to use a router on home networks too- they are a great basic security measure whether you use cl33n or not. If you're not sure if there is a router, look around for a box with Netgear, D-Link, Belkin or Linksys on it- they are just a few of the companies that make home routers. If you're still not sure, find out if the PC has the user name and password on it for the internet connection. If it does, you're out of luck: cl33n won't work on that PC. If the PC doesn't have the user name and password for the internet connection, then cl33n will almost certainly work. If you're still not sure, just give it a try! cl33n will do its best to connect to the internet but it won't damage anything if it fails.
Note that cl33n does not work on most wireless networks at this time because the PC needs to know the security details for the wireless network. If you want to encourage us to hurry up with wireless support, please contact us.
System requirements (to make a cl33n CD)
To make a cl33n CD you need any computer with a CD burner and burning software that can create a CD from an ISO CD image. All the popular CD burning programs can create CDs from ISO images.
How to make a cl33n CD in Nero Express 6
- Download cl33n.
- Save the file as cl33n.iso
- Open Nero Express
- Click on Disk image or saved project
- Browse to where you saved cl33n.iso, select it, then click Open
- Click Next
- Insert a blank CD into the CD burner and close the tray. Burning should begin immediately.
- Your cl33n CD is now ready for clean browsing happiness.
Known issues with this release
| Adobe Flash support | Unfortunately we can't distribute Adobe Flash with cl33n due to Flash's licensing restrictions. However you can install Flash via Firefox's automatic installer whenever you want to use Flash. |
| Automatic eject | When cl33n shuts down, it attempts to automatically eject the CD. This fails on some low-end Gigabyte motherboard & DVD player combinations. |
| Shutdown splash page | When cl33n shuts down, it displays a splash page similar to the one shown at startup. This screen has some random-blocks-of-color glitches on some video cards. The shutdown process still proceeds as normal, it's just uglier than we would prefer. |
| Older IBM Aptivas | cl33n might not work on some old IBM Aptivas. If you have an IBM Aptiva, we'd love to hear about your experience with cl33n. |
| Some dual-HD systems | cl33n fails to boot on some systems with two hard disks. cl33n uses the 'Casper' boot system which originates from Ubuntu. When the failure occurs, it seems that Casper can't find the CD-ROM drive. Some Ubuntu users have reported similar problems but it's still unclear whether cl33n's use of Casper could be improved to fix the problem. |

Source code & build instructions (for developers)
cl33n is built using Debian Etch and the 'live-package' package from the testing stream. These sources & instructions assume that you already have Debian Etch installed.
